How to Choose Wooden Blocks

0-1 Year Old: Colorful Cloth Blocks

Children under 1 year old have not yet formed a true sense of space. Standard hexahedral blocks with a certain texture that follow mechanical principles are not very meaningful to them. Therefore, it is best to choose interesting blocks, such as cloth blocks. Soft, brightly colored, and printed with patterns of animals or fruits, cloth blocks allow children to perceive colors, recognize objects, and develop tactile sense—without the worry of hard blocks hurting them. Of course, if such toys are not available, dolls, plush animal toys, and picture books can also serve these purposes. Babies like to put everything they get into their mouths, so both wooden and cloth blocks must be safe and non-toxic.

1-2 Years Old: Lightweight Blocks

Children over 1 year old are developing spatial awareness and begin to stack objects. Even without blocks, they enjoy piling things up and watching them fall down happily. Children will be more interested in blocks decorated with patterns like puppies, kittens, or dollhouses. Since children at this stage still have underdeveloped body control and hand-eye coordination, choose lightweight blocks to prevent injury if the stack collapses. The blocks should also not be too large, making them easy for children to grasp.

2-3 Years Old: Standard-Size Blocks

By the age of 2, children's spatial concepts, language, thinking, and imagination have developed, and their hand movements and hand-eye coordination have improved, allowing them to handle slightly more complex tasks. At this time, you can choose standard blocks for them—for example, two semicircles that form a perfect circle when paired, or two short blocks whose combined length equals one long block. Such blocks provide children with more room for creativity and expression.
